Lovin The Livin's Tryin for the Triathlon!!

My kids have been begging to do a family triathlon this summer!! We've been going to the local high school track and riding bikes and running. And we're going to start swimming when it warms up a bit. My kids are still pretty young, but this is something they all enjoy doing together. So, we'll keep it easy and fun! The training has already begun!!

Triathlon - What Is It?
Triathlon combines the sports of swimming, cycling and running into one race. Yipee!! What a good time!!

Triathlon - Getting Started
We're going to keep things short. There are lots of triathlon events for kids, which have shorter swims, bike rides and runs. Kids triathlons are usually open to kids of all ages and will typically include a 200 yard swim, a 2.5 mile bike ride and a one mile run. That's about what we're training for. Those distances aren't really that far and we've probably have already done a triathlon without even knowing it!!

Triathlon - Training
•When you're training for a triathlon, one of the most important things to remember is pacing. Don't jump in the pool and start swimming as hard as you can right away or you'll be dragging your butt the rest of the race. Start out slowly and pace yourself so you can finish the race strong.
•Work on "transitions". One of the most difficult things of a triathlon is the experience of going straight from swimming to biking and biking to running. Practice these transitions before your race day and your triathlon race will run much more smoothly.
•Practice running, cycling or biking with a group of friends so you know what it's like to race with people. It's much different swimming in a pool full of people than it is by yourself, so be prepared.
